Constitution Will Stand for $25,000

WinStar Farm’s and Twin Creeks Racing’s multiple grade I winner Constitution has been retired to stud at WinStar for 2016. The son of Tapit   will stand for a fee of $25,000 stands and nurses.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Constitution won the 2014 Florida Derby (gr. I) in just his third career start and returned at age 4 to capture the Donn Handicap (gr. I), both at Gulfstream Park. He retires with a 4-0-1 record from eight career starts—which includes his third in the 2014 Clark Handicap (gr. I) at Churchill Downs—and $1,031,596 in earnings.

“Constitution is such a talent that we hoped we could get away with fast-tracking him to our goal of the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I), but he showed us that he’s just not where he needs to be,”  said Elliott Walden, president and CEO at WinStar. “Timing is everything in this game, and Constitution is such a tremendous stallion prospect that it only makes sense to retire him at this time.

“As a fast, good-looking multiple grade I winner of such major races as the Florida Derby and Donn Handicap, he’s without a doubt one of the elite sons of Tapit. Breeders are going to love this horse, and we can’t wait to show him off during the November sales.”

Constitution won his debut in a seven-furlong maiden special weight race at Gulfstream. A month later, he stretched out to 1 1/16 miles to score a 3 1/4-length victory over eventual Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winnerTonalist in a Gulfstream allowance race, before becoming an undefeated winner of the Florida Derby.

“Constitution is as good a horse as I have ever been associated with,” said Randy Gullatt of Twin Creeks Racing. “When Elliott and I looked at him at the Saratoga sale, he was the best yearling I had ever seen. It’s nice for the business when an expensive yearling like him turns out to win two major grade I races.”

A $400,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling purchase, Constitution is out of the grade III-placed Distorted Humor   mare Baffled, who also produced grade III winner Jacaranda. The mare is a half sister to grade I winner Emcee  . This is also the family of grade I winner Awesome Humor.
